Workshop on Strengthening Science Education Program in Pesantren

1. A workshop on strengthening science education program in pesantren is held at the campus of State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta for three days between 20th and 22nd of March 2006. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Embassy of Japan and the Center for the Study of Islam and Society, UIN. The participants of this workshop consist of science teachers and experts in science education.

2. Two Japanese experts in science education, Professor Koichi TOKUDA of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Dr. Natsuko KANZAKI of Tokyo Jogakkan High School, are invited to this workshop. Professor Tokuda will give a lecture on the importance of experiments in science education and Dr. Kanzaki will conduct experiments for demonstration at the workshop.

3. The outline of the agenda is as follows:
20th March
lectures on science teaching by Professor Komarrudin Hidayat at UIN and other Muslim intellectuals and leaders, and lecture by Prof. Koichi Tokuda
21st March
(1) presentation by the 10 participants (science teachers) of a study visit to Japan last year on their experience in Japan
(2) presentation of experiments by Dr. Natsuko Kanzaki
22nd March
group discussion and drawing-up of an action plan

4. This workshop aims to improve science education program in pesantren of each participants, and by sharing the efforts of these pesantrens, it also aims to promote the similar efforts in other pesantrens in Indonesia.
