Japan, the United States and the World Bank will co-sponsor a Preparatory Conference on Peace and Reconstruction in Aceh on December 3, 2002 in Tokyo, Japan. The meeting will be attended by “like-minded countries” and international organizations that support a peaceful resolution of the Aceh conflict. The Government of Indonesia and representatives of Acehnese civil society will also attend. The conference will express the international community’s encouragement of the ongoing dialogue between the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), as facilitated by the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue (HDC). The conference will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss ways they might contribute to the social and physical reconstruction of Aceh once there is an end to hostilities.
