The objective of the project is to improve the access of the poor people to economic opportunities and social services in the targeted predominantly poor communities. The project consists of needs-based development/rehabilitation of infrastructure facilities for the following sectors as subcomponents: (1) transport; (2) water supply and sanitation; (3) small-scale irrigation; (4) markets; (5) (primary) healthcare; and (6) education. Another subcomponent is (7) microfinance service, which is introduced on a pilot basis. The project will thus contribute to poverty reduction, self-sustained development of the local economies, self-reliant capacity building of the local communities and the enhancement of administrative capacity for the local governments. The project is due to be completed in 2011.
