Outline:
Indonesia is working to correct the wide gap in the state of economy and income between Java and the eastern part of Indonesia which is in the east of Kalimantan by designating the area as a prioritized region for development.
TVRI is the only public broadcasting institution set up under the broadcasting law established in 2002 which requires TVRI to conduct broadcasting nationwide. TVRI Makassar is located in Makassar City, South Sulawesi, the central region of the eastern part of Indonesia. Makassar is the provincial capital of South Sulawesi and the center of the industry and economy of the eastern part of Indonesia. As TVRI Makassar is the only institution in the said region that produces and broadcasts TV programs, it has an important role of compiling the local culture and tradition and events as TV programs and broadcast them to the region as well as nationwide.
TVRI Makassar was the third established TVRI station in Indonesia (1974) and replenished themselves with many equipment and facilities using Japan’s assistance (loan aid). But as they became old and prone to breakdowns which made news gathering and program production activities difficult, the Japanese government assisted in improving the station’s ability to produce programs and so on.
