The Mid-Career Course
On Communication and Leadership for International Peace Operations
Application Guidelines
in JFY 2015




     The“Mid-Career Course,” which is held as part of the Program for Global Human Resource Development for Peacebuilding and Development (Global Peacebuilders Program), is open to 20 participants with 5 or more years of job experience in peacebuilding and development who aspire to further advance their professional careers in these fields. The participants will take part in 7-days of training in Japan to enhance their knowledge and skills focusing on Communication/Negotiation in peacebuilding and development and Leadership/Management competencies for UN Peace Operations. 

1. Duration
      Saturday, January 9, 2016 – Friday, January 15, 2016 (Accommodation included)

2. Program Structure
     Utilizing Communication/Negotiation and Leadership/Management competencies, in particular with regard to UN Peacekeeping Operations (PKOs), in the field of peacebuilding and development. (See Attachment 2-1, Course Overview for details):
(All sessions will be conducted in English)

3. Venue
      National Olympics Memorial Youth Center (Tokyo)

4. Participation Fees
      There will be no fees charged for selected participants

5. Qualifications
(1)At least five years of work experience in the peacebuilding and/or development-related fields
(2) The strong will to utilize their experiences to date to further their careers in peacebuilding and development, in particular in UN PKOs and Special Political Missions (SPMs).
(3)The training will be conducted in English. Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
(4)Full attendance at the training
*In principle, participants are required to attend the training in full. However, participants with extenuating circumstances may opt to only take part in the latter half of the training.


6. Number of Participants to Be Admitted
      20 Participants (Japanese and other nationals)

7. Required Documents for Application
      The application form (Attachment 2-2) or the United Nations Personal History Profile (PHP or P11)

8.Submission of the Application
Fill in the Online Application form and upload the required documents.

9. Application Deadline
      Tuesday, November 10, 2015 (5:00 pm Japan Time, GMT+9)

10. Selection Process
      Your application will be evaluated and considered in terms of 1) experience and skills in the related field, and 2) the concrete vision and potential to advance your career. The applicants will be informed by email, phone call, or mail regardless of the results by the end of November.

12. Obligations of the Participants
(1) Participants are expected to carry out the program with utmost diligence.
(2) Participants should submit a final report and provide inputs to improve the program.
(3) Participants should reply to the follow-up inquiries regularly made by the Government of Japan about their latest status after the completion of the program.


13. After the Program
Participants are expected to participate in and cooperate with alumni networking.

14. Preparation Seminar
      Preparation Seminar may be carried out in advance to the Mid-Career Course during the weekends of December or the beginning of January for those without previous work experience in the UN system. Participation in this seminar is not an obligatory requirement.

15. Transportation Fee
      HPC will consider the possible payment of travel expenses for participants who live overseas and have relevant job experience in the UN or other organizations. Such participants will be expected to make a considerable contribution in the training as a resource person.

16. Notes
(1) The information in the required documents for the application will be used only for the selection and admission of the participants in the program. Please note that photos taken during the course of the program may be used by MOFA and related organizations for the purpose of promoting the program.
(2) Submitted documents will not be returned.
(3) Updated information on the program will be available on the HPC website.
