Japan to Support Reproductive Health in Indonesia
(Grant Aid for Improvement of Medical Care of Public Hospitals in West Kalimantan Province Program)

1. The Government of Japan has decided to extend grant aid of up to ¥435 million (approximately US$ 4.2 million or Rp. 39 billion) to the Republic of Indonesia for Improvement of Medical Care of Public Hospitals in West Kalimantan Province. Notes to this effect were exchanged on March 29 in Jakarta between H.E. Mr. Yutaka Iimura, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Indonesia, and Mr. Herijanto Soeprapto, Director General of Asia Pacific and Africa, Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

2. The government of Indonesia is making its utmost effort toward health sector reform based on “Healthy Indonesia 2010”, for the purpose of strengthening the prevention of diseases and improvement and expansion high-quality health care service that is equitable and affordable for its citizens.
   The government of Japan, responding the request from the Indonesian government, has decided to provide basic medical equipment for all 11 general hospitals in the province of West Kalimantan, which has still mortality of infants and mothers. This assistance is expected to improve the obstetric emergency care in the province of West Kalimantan.

3. Reduction infant and mother mortality are both important parts of internationally agreed Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Government of Japan has extended various forms of assistances to Indonesia in order to support the efforts of Indonesian government toward achieving MDGs.
