Handover Ceremony for schools and health centers built with Japan’s Grant Aid for reconstruction of areas affected by the earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java

1. A handover ceremony for schools and health centers built with Japan’s Grant Aid for reconstruction of areas affected by the earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java was held on January 14, 2008 in Bantul District, D.I.Y. From the Japanese side, the handover ceremony was attended by Mr. Ken Okaniwa, Minister for economic affairs & development, Embassy of Japan. From the Indonesian side, the ceremony was attended by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, Governor of Yogyakarta Province, Drs. HM Idham Samawi, Governor of Bantul district, Pro. Dr. Suyanto, Director General of Primary Education of Ministry of National Education. The ceremony was convened to handover 2 primary schools, 7 junior high schools and 5 health centers rebuilt with Japanese grant aid, totaling 890 million yen (approximately US$ 8 million).


(Note: The following facilities were handed over

- 2 Primary schools : SDN Ngasinan dan SDN Pungkuran
- 7 Junior High Schools: SMP 2 Pleret, SMP 3 Pleret, SMP 1 Imogiri, SMP 2 Panjangan, SMP 2 Bantul, SMP 4 Pandak, SMP 1 Kretek
- 5 Health centers ; Sewon 2, Jetis 1, Jetis 2, Pleret, Imogiri 1 ).


2.Since the earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java on May 27, 2006, the Government of Japan has provided assistance of emergency humanitarian needs and reconstruction amounting to about US$32 million. The reconstruction of 9 schools and 5 health centers is part of this assistance.
