Japan’s Additional Contribution to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

1. On May 23 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to contribute 560million dollars in the coming years to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund). This decision was announced by Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, who attended the "International Symposium: From Okinawa to Toyako: Dealing with Communicable Diseases As Global Human Security Threats," held on May 23 in Tokyo.




2. The three major infectious diseases - HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria - have been hampering the progress of developing countries and posing serious threats to human security. It is feared that these three diseases kill five million people every year, making it very difficult to achieve the Millennium Development Goal 6 of halting and beginning to reverse the spread of infectious diseases by 2015. Based on this decision, Japan intends to continue to contribute to the achievement of that Millennium Development Goal through the Global Fund.
