Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Inauguration Ceremony
On March 24, the inauguration ceremony for the North-South Line of the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, which was constructed with the support of Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), was held at the Bundaran HI Station in Central Jakarta.
On the Indonesian side, H.E. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi); H.E. Mr. Wiranto, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, H.E. Ms. Sri Mulyani, Minister of Finance, H.E. Mr. Budi Karya Sumadi, Minister of Transportation; Mr. Anies Baswedan, Governor of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta; and Mr. William Sabandar, President Director of PT. MRT Jakarta, attended the ceremony. Those in attendance on the Japanese side included Mr. Masafumi Ishii, Ambassador of Japan to Indonesia; Mr. Yasuhiro Shinohara, Vice-Minister for International Affairs of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism; and Mr. Yasushi Tanaka, Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA); as well as representatives from the contractors that undertook the construction of this project.
President Jokowi and Governor Anies celebrated the inauguration of Indonesia's first subway line and expressed their appreciation for Japan’s contribution to the project.
The MRT North-South Line project is a vital one designed to ease the chronic traffic congestion in the metropolitan area of Jakarta. Since the project’s groundbreaking ceremony in October 2013, Japan has constructed the MRT system by utilizing our quality infrastructure technology and has seen the project to completion to enable us to celebrate today’s inauguration ceremony. In a parallel effort, Japan has proactively transferred our technology on site to Indonesia’s engineers and workers.
Japan will continue to contribute to Indonesia's economic growth through the export of Japan’s quality infrastructure.
