Jakarta, 23 March 2007 Second Batch of DPD Members Off to Japan for Autonomy Study
[Bahasa Indonesia]
The Government of Japan, as a part of its assistance to the Government of Republic of Indonesia for democratic reforms, will invite 15 people from the Regional Representative Council (DPD) and the DPD secretariat to attend the JICA’s training in Japan.
This Training Group headed by Mr. Faisal Mahmud, a DPD representative from Central Sulawesi, will pay a visit to Tokyo, Kyoto and Yamato city in Kanagawa Prefecture from March 24 until April 2, 2007 to exchange views with members of House of Councilors (Sangiin), Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, local governments and local assemblies for the study on the issues of parliamentary system, local autonomy, and efforts of local governments in Japan. This training is expected to contribute to the improvement of DPD’s function and management, the empowerment of DPD members and the betterment of their activities, as well as to the improvement of DPD secretariat’s function..
DPD was established based on the 3rd amendment of the Constitution in 2001. The first election of DPD members were held in April 2004, and the members were inaugurated on October 1, 2004. As DPD plays a significant role in the development of democracy and local autonomy in Indonesia, the Government of Japan through JICA has been supporting DPD’s activities, such as to facilitate the preparation for the inauguration of the DPD in 2004 by organizing the DPD Working Committee in July and the DPD Workshop in August 2004 for the elected DPD members. In March 2006, the Government of Japan invited the first Training Group of DPD members, which is now followed by the 2nd Training Group to Japan this time..
