The Government of Japan, with the aim of contributing to the social welfare of Indonesian people at the grassroots level, has decided to extend grant aid assistance to two Japanese NGOs, through its Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO.
The project description is as follows :
(1)   | "Improvement of sanitation at health centers through excavation of deep tube-wells at Serang District, Banten Province"
Name of the Japanese NGO: People’s Hope Japan / PHJ
Value of assistance: US$ 108,236
(Background)
In rural area of Serang district, Banten Province, which is located in western part of Java Island, water supply system is not fully developed. Although symptoms of chronic diarrhea and dermatitis are widely observed among residents in the area, potable water is not available to them and clean water is not readily available even at local medical institutions, which hampers such institutions from providing proper treatment for the water borne diseases.
(Activities and Outcome of the Project)
This project aims at improvement of local health services and sanitation in order to promote health of the residents. A Japanese NGO, People’s Hope Japan/PHJ, will excavate deep-tube wells, install electric pump utilizing solar energy at some of medical institutions in the area. Additionally, PHJ will hold several workshops regarding water and sanitation for local people and medical staff in the area. It is expected that the capacity of the local medical staff will be developed and the sanitation and health conditions would be improved.

Name of the Japanese NGO: APEX (Asian People’s Exchange)
Value of assistance: US$ 176,991
(Background)

(Activities and Outcome of the Project)
This project aims at environmental conservation, production of alternative energy and improvement of living standard of the poor in the area. A Japanese NGO, APEX, Asian People’s Exchange, will support afforestation by planting Jatropha Curcas on uncultivated land for the purpose of producing bio-fuel, construct a Bio-Mass plant which utilizes not only seeds but also residues of the Jatropha plant, which are normally left unused after extraction of oil from the seed. The bio-fuel is utilized for power generation and desalinization of water. It is expected that annual income of approximately 1,200 residents in the area would increase. At the same time, shortage of electricity and potable water will be improved.
