Outline:
Indonesia is one of the richest countries for its biodiversity. In order to promote the effort to conserve its biodiversity, the Government of Indonesia formulated, in 2003, the Indonesian Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, IBSAP. As a realization of this Plan, since then, as many as 519 regions have been designated as the conservation areas with total land coverage of 280,000 km2 and 294 species of floras and faunas have been legalized as protected.
However, the number of endangered floras and faunas continue to rise due to the poverty within the Indonesia society as well as the lack of the people’s awareness on the importance of conservation. These factors are made even worse by the slowness in controlling the conservation areas, which are vital for the endangered floras and faunas. Taking these into account, Indonesia needs systematic and comprehensive planning and actions for conserving its biodiversity.
Through this project, various environmental education programs, provision of input for the development of ecotourism, and coordination for various Japanese support actions in relation to biodiversity management have been implemented.
