Assistance for Earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java
(Japan's Grant Aid for Disaster Reconstruction to RI)

1. The Government of Japan has decided to extend grant aid for the following one project, a total amount of which is up to ¥890 million to the Republic of Indonesia. The diplomatic notes were signed between Mr.Shin Ebihara, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Indonesia, and Mr.Primo Alui Joelianto,Director General for Asia Pacific and Africa Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, in Jakarta on August 15, 2006.
【The title of the project and the maximum amount】
“The Project for the Reconstruction for the Area Affected by the Earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java”
(¥ 890 million, approximately US$ 7.7 million or Rp 70 billion)
2. The project is intended to restore and construct facilities providing public services such as education and health for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the disaster-stricken area. The project comprises the reconstruction of seven secondary schools (99 classrooms), two elementary schools (12 classrooms) and five health centers providing medical treatment in Bantul District in the Special Province of Yogyakarta.
3 The Government of Japan has already implemented the following assistance :
(1) Emergency relief goods such as tents, water purifiers, etc. were handed over on 31 May. (total amount approx. USD 180,000)
(2) Medical Teams by JICA and the Self Defence Force were dispatched, and treated patients of around 4,000 in total
(3) New commitment on grant aid
      - USD 1 million to IFRC (Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies)
      - USD 4 million to the Government of Indonesia to procure urgently needed goods such as school tents         (3,700sets), family tents (2,400sets), etc.
      (Note : The total grant assistance amounts to approximately USD 13 million with this new grant aid).
(4) Support for socializing earthquake proof building technique etc.
Embassy of Japan supports the project of Indonesia Islamic University (UII) in socializing earthquake proof building technique (First seminar to take place on 28 August).
JICA starts implementation of a number of community empowerment projects such as support for socializing earthquake proof building technique, for revitalizing SMEs, etc..

Recent Japan’s Assistance in response to Disaster in Indonesia
1. Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster in Aceh and Nias (December 2004, March 2005)       → Grant assistance of approx. USD 300 million is implemented or underway.
(1) Bilateral Assistance (USD 160 million)
(a) Non-project grant aid, such as urgent recovery of the west coast road, recovery of water supply and sanitation system etc (14 projects).
(b) JICA projects, including restoration of raw sewage processing facility in Banda Aceh, emergency rehabilitation and reconstruction plan for Banda Aceh etc. (USD 140 million)
(2) Multilateral Assistance (USD 140 million)
(a) Contribution in response to UN flash appeal (approx. USD 120 million allocated for Aceh)
(b) Through World Bank and Asian Development Bank (USD 20 million)
2. Tsunami in Southwest Coast of Java Island (July 17, 2006)
      Emergency relief goods such as tents, water purifiers, etc. were handed over on 20 July.
