Jakarta, 20 Oktober 2006 Japan’s Assistance for Earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java through Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects
(Procurement of an Ambulance to Muhammadiyah General Hospital in Bantul and Renovation of the Centre for “Rutaran Miring” Ceramics in Klaten)

1. The Government of Japan, with the aim of contributing to the reconstruction in the areas affected by the May 27th earthquake in Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) and Province of Central Java, through its Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects, has decided to extend grant aid assistance to Muhammadiyah General Hospital in Bantul and Regional Development Agency (Bapeda) Klaten to the amount of USD 83,553 (approx. 693 million rupiah).
2. The two projects are as below.
(1)  | The Project for Procurement of an Ambulance for Muhammadiyah General Hospital in Bantul, Yogyakarta
Implementing Partner : Muhammadiyah General Hospital in Bantul, Yogyakarta
Value of Assistance : USD 74,886
An ambulance with appropriate medical emergency equipments which will be provided to Muhamadiyah General Hospital in Bantul through this project replaces an ambulance wrecked by the May 27th earthquake. The Project will enhance the Hospital’s capability to cope with emergency operations in the region. |
(2)  | The Project for Renovation of the Center for “Rutaran Miring” Ceramics
Implementing Partner : Regional Development Agency (BAPEDA), Klaten, Central Java
Value of Assistance : USD 8,667
This Project will renovate the Center for ‘Rutaran Miring’ Ceramics’ workshop and a show room which was originally built through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects in 2004. This Project is a continuation of the support for regional economic development and cultural inheritance of traditional handicrafts based on “Rutaran Miring” craft skills in Melikan Village, Klaten District, Central Java. |
3. It is expected that the Projcets will contribute to;
(1)  | the enhancement and strengthening of the capability for emergency operations of Muhammadiyah General Hospital in Bantul to quickly respond to disasters in the Earthquake affected areas, especially in Bantul, Yogyakarta. |
(2)  | the mid to long term recovery in the disaster area through regional economic development by the restoration of the Center for “Rutaran Miring” Ceramics in Klaten. |
4. Since the May 27th earthquake, the Government of Japan has already implemented the following assistance.
(1)  | Emergency relief goods such as tents, water purifiers, etc. were handed over on May 31. (total amount approx. USD 180,000) |
(2)  | Medical Teams from JICA and the Self Defense Forces were dispatched, and treated a total of about 4,000 patients. |
(3)  | Implementation of grant aid (approx. USD 13 million in total)
- USD 1 million to IFRC ( International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies)
- USD 4 million to the Government of Indonesia to procure urgently needed goods such as school tents (3,700sets), family tents (2,400sets), etc.
- USD 7.7 million to the Government of Indonesia to reconstruct schools and puskesmas in Bantul District.

(4)  | Support for disseminating earthquake proof building techniques etc.
- Support CEEDEDS-UII to disseminate Earthquake-Resistant Housing amongst carpenters in Yogyakarta through Grant Assistance for Grass Roots Human Security Projects (done in Sep-Oct 2006)
- A number of community empowerment projects by JICA such as support for socializing earthquake proof building technique and for revitalizing SMEs, etc.
