Jakarta, 13 March 2007 Japan’s Assistance for Acehnese Society through Japanese NGO, AMDA International (Trauma and Physical Health Care)

The Government of Japan, with the aim of contributing to the tsunami-reconstruction and the consolidation of peace in Aceh, through its Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO, has decided to extend grant aid assistance to Japanese NGO, AMDA International, to the amount of USD 246,014 (approx. Rp 2,200,000,000).
This cooperation will be implemented with the purpose of assisting the better mental and physical health of children in both tsunami-affected areas and conflict-affected areas. The two projects are as below.:
(1)   | “Trauma Care Project for Tsunami-Affected Children.”
Value of Assistance: USD 82,170
The project will be undertaken in order to relieve the children who are still living in barracks in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar from trauma caused by tsunami through creative activities and reading in the libraries under the leadership of community youth. |
(2) | “Community Rehabilitation Project through Mental and Physical Health Care” Value of Assistance: USD 163,844
The project will be undertaken in order to relieve the children in Aceh Selatan, post-conflict area, from trauma caused by the long-term conflict though creative activities and reading in the libraries under the leadership of community youth. The mobile clinic and health education will also be carried out in order to improve health and sanitation in the communities. |
Efforts are underway in Aceh to recover from earthquake and tsunami disaster in December 2004, as well as to build peace with the signing of the MoU peace agreement in August 2005. In such disastrous circumstance, the mental and physical health care of promising children through psycho social activities, and improvement of health and sanitation in communities are significant importance to promote both recovery from the disaster and peace building in Aceh.
AMDA International has been actively engaged in assistance for emergency, rehabilitation and reconstruction ever since the tsunami hit Aceh. In August 2006, it has started the post-conflict development assistance in Aceh Selatan, one of the areas heavily affected by conflict.

Japanese Government Assistance to Aceh
1. The Government of Japan has contributed approximately USD 300 million (bilateral 160 million (including from JICA), and 140 million through international agencies) to rehabilitation in response to the earthquake and tsunami of December 24, 2004.
2. The Government of Japan has so far contributed more than USD 12 million to the peace building in Aceh. It has been supporting the individuals such as reintegration program for GAM ex-combatants and political prisoners (Implementing Agency IOM, USD 8.6 million), the development of conflict-affected communities, and Governance for Peace Consolidation.
