Jakarta, April 24, 2007 STI/HIV/AIDS Prevention Support for Lampung and Samarinda
through the Grant Assistance for Grass Roots Human Security Projects
(The Project for STI/HIV/AIDS Prevention for Sex Workers and Adlescents in Bandar Lampung and Samarinda)

On 23 April 2007, Indonesian Planned Parenthood Association (IPPA, known as Pekumpulan Keluarga Berencana Indonesia or PKBI) commenced implementing the project funded by the Government of Japan though Grant Assistance for Grass Roots Human Security Project, titled “The Project for STI/HIV/AIDS Prevention for Sex Workers and Adolescents in Bandar Lampung and Samarinda”. The Government of Japan decided to extend grant aid assistance to IPPA’s activity to the amount of USD 89,857 (approx. Rp. 887,000,000) on 26 March 2007.
This cooperation has been undertaken with the purpose of improving sexual behaviour of high risk groups such as sex workers and adolescents, and ensuring their access to health service in 2 cities in Bandar Lampung, Lampung and Samarinda, East Kalimantan by providing information concerning sexual transmitted infection (STI) such as HIV/AIDS and prevention education. It is also aimed to take an approach to the related communities for their support and understanding toward this project. The three main activities are as below.

(2)  | Peer education (group discussion, media distribution, training peer leaders etc) |
(3)  | Prevention campaign to stakeholders (workshop etc) |
On 23 April 2007, IPPA/PKBI held training in its headquarter in Jakarta for facilitators who will be involved directly in this prevention activities in Bandar Lampung and Samarinda. Mr. Ken Okaniwa, Minister for Economic Cooperation Affairs in Embassy of Japan, attended the opening session. He addressed his hope for the acceleration of STI prevention through implementing this project.
Japan has been engaged actively in improving health and medical service in Indonesia. Particularly for STI prevention effort, Japan extended grant aid assistance to IPPA in 2003 for “The Project for Comprehensive Package of Measures to Sexual Transmitted Infection in Palembang” and “The Project for Supporting Sexual Transmitted Infection Prevention for Adolescent” though its Grant Assistance for Grass Roots Human Security Project.
