Jakarta, September 10, 2007 Peace-building Assistance for Conflict Areas in Aceh through the Grant Assistance for Grass Roots Human Security (Women’s Empowerment and Peace Education)

With the aim of contributing to the consolidation of peace in Aceh, the Government of Japan has decided to extend the Grant Assistance for Grass Roots Human Security to three local NGOs active in Aceh to the amount of USD 228,171 (approx. Rp. 2,050,000,000). On 10 September, the ceremony for the grant contract signing was carried out at the BRA office in Banda Aceh, witnessed by Mr. Ken Okaniwa, Minister of the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia
This grant assistance will be used to support NGO activities for the economic empowerment of women in the conflict affected areas and for peace education in high schools. The summary of the three projects are as follows:
(1) | "The Project for Economic Empowerment through Handicraft Small Industry Development for Women Conflict Victims in Aceh Besar District"

The project targets women conflict victims, including conflict widows, in Aceh Besar District. It aims to economically empower women through skills training and production in traditional Acehnese embroidery handicrafts. |

(2) | "The Project for Economic Empowerment through Making Kopiah Riman and Garment Making for Female Conflict Victims in Pidie District"

Value of Assistance   : US$ 56.837 |
The project targets women conflict victims, including conflict widows, in Pidie District. It aims to economically empower women through skills training in sewing and the production of the traditional Acehnese Islamic cap “Kupiah Riman”. |

(3) | "The Project for Promoting Peace Education in High Schools in Aceh"

The project disseminates peace education to high school students through Acehnese traditions and ethics education in 90 schools in all 23 districts and cities in Aceh. This Project is co-funded by GoJ and UNICEF.. |

After years of conflict in Aceh, with the signing of the MoU peace agreement in August 2005, consolidation of peace through social integration of ex-GAM members and reconstruction of the economy has become a very important challenge. At the Japan-Indonesia summit meeting on August 20 this year, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed intention to consider further assistance for peace-building and reconstruction in Aceh. These three projects are follow-up to the discussion between the two leaders.

5. | Yen Loan Projects for Aceh in fiscal 2006
(1) | Peusangan Hydroelectric Power Plant (about 26 billion yen (approx. USD 224,3 million)) Construction of a 86.4 MW hydroelectric power plant and related facilities. |
(2) | Aceh Reconstruction Program ( about 11,6 billion yen (approx. USD 100 million)) Support to development of road and drainage system in Aceh. |
