Jakarta, 17 June 2008 Japan-Indonesia Joint Study Workshop on Forest Fire Control
[Bahasa Indonesia]
On 18 June, the Embassy of Japan together with the Ministry of Forestry of Indonesia and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) Indonesia Office will organize a workshop concerning forest fire control in Indonesia in Jakarta.
On 28 February this year, when Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla had a meeting, they shared the view that Japan and Indonesia would continue to cooperate on environmental issues. This workshop has been arranged as a follow-up of the meeting. Forest Fire Control in Indonesia is extremely important from the standpoint of forest preservation, haze control, protection of biodiversity and fighting global warming. It is expected that bilateral cooperation on climate change will be strengthened when President Yudhoyono visits Japan to attend the G8 Toyako Summit in early July
Furthermore, this workshop is registered as an activity in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of friendship between Japan and Indonesia. 2008 is the 50th year since Japan and Indonesia established diplomatic relations. Many events are being organized to further strengthen the bilateral relations.
At this workshop, Ambassador of Japan to Indonesia, Mr. Kojiro Shiojiri, and Minister for Forestry of Indonesia, Mr. M.S. Kaban, will deliver opening remarks, followed by discussion among officials from the Ministry of Forestry and regional governments of Indonesia, officials from the Japanese Forestry Agency, and academics from Japan and Indonesia. The discussion will focus on strengthening actions on the ground and results of research relating to forest fire control. Cooperation of JICA for forest fire control which is being implemented since 1996 will also be presented. The workshop will be attended by concerned persons from the Ministry of Forestry of Indonesia, regional governments of the 8 priority provinces for forest fire control, universities, international research organization and NGOs..
Through this workshop, it is expected that common understanding of the current situation and challenges regarding forest fire control in Indonesia will be achieved among the practitioners and researchers, and discussion will take place regarding future actions and cooperation between Japan and Indonesia.
In January 2008, Prime Minister Fukuda announced that Japan will provide assistance of approximately US$ 10 billion in 5 years from 2008 in order to forge partnership with those developing countries which are striving to achieve both the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and economic growth. As the largest donor country to Indonesia, Japan will continue to actively promote cooperation on forests.
(Note 1)
The 8 priority provinces for forest fire prevention are North Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, South Sulawesi.
