Jakarta, June 25, 2008 Japan's 545 MIllion Yen Grant Aid to RI to Provide Security Equipments for Main Ports

The Government of Japan has decided to extend grant aid totaling \545 million (approximately US$ 5.04 million or Rp. 46.7 billion) to Republic of Indonesia to strengthen the system of port security.
    The diplomatic notes were signed between Mr. Kojiro Shiojiri, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Indonesia and Mr. Primo Alui Joelianto, Director General for Asia Pacific and Africa Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Indonesia, in Jakarta on June 25 (Wed), 2008..
    The project title and maximum amount are as follows;
    "Improvement of Port Security System"
    (545 million Yen, approximately US$ 5.04 million or Rp. 46.7 billion)
Indonesia has the world-important sea traffic area such as the Strait of Malacca and Singapore. On the other hand, serious acts of terrorism had occurred in Indonesian sea area for 4 consecutive years since 2002. Therefore, Indonesia is struggling to strengthen the security system especially at ports and airports which terrorists often attack.
    The Government of Indonesia is improving security level of port facilities in according with grovel standard as a member nation of International Maritime Organization (IMO), and requested the grant aid cooperation regarding the fund to provide security equipments such as CCTV camera and X-rays inspector etc. at 8 Indonesian main ports (Belawan, Dumai, Tanjung Pinang, Palenbang, Teluk Bayur, Pontianak, Benoa and Makassar).
    It is expected that this project will enhance the security system of main ports which are important for the international logistics system and steadily improve the economic activities and the life of the people in Indonesia. Moreover it is expected to greatly contribute to the safe trade and investment climate for Japan and Indonesia.
The Government of Japan, as the largest donor country to Indonesia, will continue to assist Indonesia’s efforts in the area of the anti-terrorism.
